Mazelle L. Wood

Mazelle L. (Rocha) Wood, age 59, loving Mother of two daughters, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Thursday, March 9, 2023 after a short but intense rare cancer diagnosis.

Mazelle (Mazie) was born on December 3rd, 1963 in Fall River, MA to Larry and Barbara Rocha of Little Compton, RI. She worked at R.I. Superior Court where she was loved and will be deeply missed. At work she was known as “Crazy Mazie.”

Mazelle was a special soul. She had a passion for life that was unmatched. Mazelle was a published author of a book that chronicled her battle and victory over Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma over 20 years ago (“One Hell of a Ride: Mazie’s Victory Over Cancer”). Her mission in life was to help others that were going through cancer, spreading her message of strength, faith, and positivity by sharing her own story with anyone who needed to hear it.

Mazelle loved horses, traveling, her family and friends, a good glass of Barefoot Chardonnay and her weekly Zumba and Barre classes. She especially enjoyed spending time with her “Little Logan” and “Rockstar.” She had a smile that would light up any room and a way of bringing hope to hopeless situations. Mazelle was a loving Mother, Sister, Aunt and Friend. She was loved beyond measure and will be deeply missed.

Mazelle was preceded in death by her parents Larry and Barbara Rocha and her brother Larry Rocha II. She leaves behind her daughters Jessica (Tim) Palmquist and Kendall (Jacob) Sallar, her beloved Grandchild Logan Palmquist as well as Brenden Palmquist and Mathew Palmquist, her sisters Lisa (Jim) Roies & Tammy (Bill) Needham, her grand-pup Rocky as well as several nieces and nephew.

A ceremony followed by a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, 11:00AM at First Baptist Old Stone Church in Tiverton, RI.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.

I spoke to Mazelle only once on the phone but it is a conversation I will never forget. It was this past October and the empathy, kindness, strength, and compassion she showed to me, a complete stranger, will never be forgotten. She lived to give to others. And though we talked just that once I feel blessed to have made that connection. I will see u again my friend.

My deepest & sincerest thoughts, prayers & condolences go out to Mazie’s family. She was a beautiful person whose mission in life was to help people. She was one of a kind & will be missed greatly! Mazie, you were the strongest person I’ve ever known. No matter what life threw at you, you met each challenge head on with fierce determination & incredible positivity. You were a true friend who would always listen & offer advice. You would brighten our days by just being your “Crazy Mazie” self, especially when sending us silly dance videos! It was an honor & a privilege to be your friend. I love & miss you so much, but I know you’re at peace now with your mom, dad & Larry.
