Anne Elizabeth Sommers


Anne Elizabeth Sommers (née Winnenberg), 98, died Wednesday April 3 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Anne was born in Louisville, KY to the late Frederick Winnenberg and Anne Elizabeth (McKenney) Winnenberg. After graduating from high school, she attended art classes at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville. Anne worked in the Art Department at the Louisville Pottery and was employed by the Army Map Service and Bell Telephone. In 1958, Anne married Roderic W. Sommers of Medford, MA and they settled in Needham, MA. They were married 57 years, until Roderic’s death.

Anne was a lifelong Presbyterian and remained active in her church well into her senior years. She volunteered 34 years for the Needham Traveling Meals Program and Glover Hospital. Anne always had a smile, kind words and a sympathetic ear for everyone she met.

She was skilled in multiple arts and crafts, from drawing and painting, to crocheting, quilting, rug braiding, macrame and flower arranging. She loved animals and often depicted them in her crafts.

Anne is survived by her son David (Janet Wang) Sommers, daughter Laura Sommers, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, Anne was preceded in death by her brothers, Theodore and James Winnenberg and daughter Carol Sommers.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff and residents at the Scandinavian Living Center, where Anne resided for five years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 10 am at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street, West Newton, MA, 02465.

    Anne Elizabeth Sommers was a dear friend for over 40 years. She was gracious and kind towards everyone she met.
    My sympathy to her daughter, Laura, and son David and his wife, Janet.
