Hugh “Hughie” T. Doherty

Hugh “Hughie” T. Doherty died Friday, July 27, 2018 at the age of sixty-four with his family by his side. Hughie was the husband of Lisa (Mackel) Doherty of Saugus, MA. Hughie was the proud step-grandfather of Olivia and Brianna.

Hughie was born in Charlestown, the eleventh child of the late Mary (Burns) and Bernard Doherty. He was the dear brother of Nancy Ryan and her husband Dick of Readville, Mary Deery and her husband Bob of East Dennis, Barbara Hunter and her husband Joe of Gilford, NH and Saugus, MA, Roger Doherty of Charlestown, the late Peggy Gillis and her husband Neil of East Dennis, Danny Doherty and his wife Lily of Saugus, and the late Bernard, Kathleen, Tommy, Joanne and Johnny Doherty, all of Charlestown. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, as well as great childhood friends, including the late Sidney McComiskey.

Hughie attended St. Francis de Sales and Charlestown High School and received his Associate’s degree from Bunker Hill Community College in 1975. Hughie was the proudest of Townies and had so many fun years with friends and family and was one of the original “Parkies.” If there was a function, he would be the first one there and the last to leave. He enjoyed music, karaoke with Lisa, movies, the Three Stooges and Marilyn Monroe. He also enjoyed many concerts with Lisa, family and friends. Hugh may have been disabled, but you never would have known it by the way he lived his life. Hughie and Lisa enjoyed visiting friends and family in Boynton Beach, FL, Lake Winnipesaukee, NH and East Dennis, MA.

Before his accident, Hugh worked summers for the Action for Boston, Community Development division of the Kennedy Center. He supervised and counseled the kids who maintained the recreational parks. Hugh counseled and mentored many as an advocate to help them become more independent in their lives. Hugh was most proud as a member of AA for twenty-five years. He never missed a meeting and truly appreciated the help of his sponsor, Jim. Everyone that met Hughie, liked him instantly. He made you feel comfortable with his sense of humor and positive nature. His disability did not define him and it did not stop him. He will be missed dearly by all family, friends and those who met him along the way.

His Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday August 8, 2018 at 10:00am at St. Francis de Sales Church, 303 Bunker Hill St, Charlestown, MA 02129. A visitation will be from 9am-10am in St. Francis de Sales Church prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, Development Office, 1575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, or online at giving.spauldingnetwork.org.
