Judith Anne McConnell
Beloved Mother and Grandmother
Judith Anne McConnell (Thornton), 84, also known to everyone as Gram, passed away peacefully on January 23rd, 2025 surrounded by loved ones and her beloved dog Buddy. Judy passed after a brave fight with several complicated medical issues.
Judy was born in Lawrence, MA on February 11th, 1940. She was the beloved daughter of Ralph and Priscilla Thornton (Holt). She grew up in North Andover with her brother, Richard and sister, Barbara. She graduated from North Andover High School and went on to be a candy striper, nursing aide, and worked her way up to Quality Insurance Inspector at Bard Medical. Judy had an amazing work ethic; working tirelessly to provide for her family. Returning from her retirement, Judy was hired by Salem Haven Nursing and Rehab Center alongside her beloved friend, Harriet Kelleher. The joy and compassion the two of them brought to the residents there for over 15 years was immeasurable.
She was blessed with six children: John, Scott, Nancy, June, Billy and Steven. Judy was the grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, who she loved dearly. Her family will always remember Gram’s generosity, kindness, and the warmth of her love.
Gram enjoyed watching musicals, drawing, painting, knitting, listening to music, and dancing. Gram was also an exceptional card player. Nicknamed the Queen of Rummy, a win against her was something you never forgot. Judy is survived by her children John Coburn of Goffstown, NH, Scott Coburn of Goffstown, NH, Nancy Gordon of Plaistow, NH, June Witham-Clark of Methuen, Steven McConnell and his wife Robin of Dracut, sister-in-law Marsha Thornton, 22 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Herbie, son Billy, sister Barbie, brother Richard and other family members.
We would like to thank Beacon Hospice, Cedar Healthcare and Lawrence General Hospital for all of the devoted medical care provided to Gram. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Healthcare’s Resident Council Fund.
Her Celebration of Life will be held on February 11th 2025, which would have been her 85th birthday. It will take place from 12- 4pm at the American Legion, 574 Broadway Road in Dracut, MA
