Walter Maia


Walter Andrew Maia passed away peacefully on Thursday, October, 17, 2019 at the age of 98.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Walter was an amazing selfless
person inside and out. He always kept a smile on his face and shared words of wisdom and
encouragement. He had an awesome sense of humor and loved life. Some words of expressions
he mentioned on a consistent basis were “Beautiful” and “Thank God for that.” He was a WWII
veteran and served in the United States Army from 1939 – 1944, in the 372 all black infantry
army. He had a love for cooking, fishing, gardening, and sewing. Walter served as President for
over ten years at the Senior Fishing club at the Vine Street Community Center in Roxbury, MA.
Walter lived a full and blessed life throughout his years on this earth. Walter leaves to cherish
his memory, his loving wife Florine Maia of 39 years, their children: John Leonard (Andrea),
Victoria Leonard, Elizabeth Maia-Peterson (Corey), and Melissa Maia. He raised two nephews,
as his own: John Turner and Jonathan Turner. He raised two nieces, as his own: Amanda Turner
and Jessica Turner. He leaves ten grandchildren, and three great grand-children. He leaves
behind two special friends he considered sons: David Hinton and Willie Curry; Longtime friends
John White and John Ed Turner. Walter had a myriad of nieces and nephews who cherished him
as he did them.
Join us on Saturday, November 2, 2019, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. to celebrate the Life and Legacy of this
awesome man. Memorial Service location: Shawmut Community Church of God; 600 Shawmut
Avenue, Boston, MA 02118. Repast: Vine Street Community Center at 3:00 p.m.; 339 Dudley
Street, Roxbury, MA 02119.
