Elaine Fried Nesin

Elaine Fried Nesin, wife of late Arthur Nesin of Greenport NY,
passed away in the presence of her family on January 18, 2023
at age 92 in Newton, MA.

Elaine is survived by her three children, Richard (Sue) Nesin,
Nancy Nesin Ferretti, and Jenny (David Perna) Nesin and 4
grandchildren.

Elaine was an only child born to Reeva Hecht of Russia and
Nathan Fried of Lithuania. Born in Chicago, she was raised in
Schuylkill Haven, PA, then moved to New York City where she
was a proud graduate of the Mount Sinai Hospital School of
Nursing. During her training, she met and fell in love with Artie
and spent 63 beautiful years together. They raised their family
in Rockville Centre, Long Island, where they lived for 50 years.
Elaine was a loving mother and wife, worked in hospitals and
then as a school nurse. She always prioritized making people
feel comfortable. She enjoyed her friends, crossword puzzles,
reading, cooking, mahjong, gardening, and pursued classes up
to age 85. Because of her commitment to social justice, Elaine
marched for Civil Rights, Women’s Rights and volunteered for
the ACLU. Her daughters were so proud to march by her side!

Throughout their lives together, Elaine and Artie spent
summers enjoying the company of family and friends on their
boat. After retirement, they moved to Greenport, Long Island
where they lived happily on a creek surrounded by nature. They
were devoted grandparents and reveled in visits! They chose
Greenport to summer and retire to be close to the water. Later
Artie’s sister and husband moved close by, and they had many
happy times together.

Elaine will be remembered for her presence which emanated
joy and generosity. People gravitated toward her caring, sweet,
and big-hearted way. She made many wonderful friends
everywhere she went and always wanted to make sure that
people were comfortable and happy.

Elaine found inspiration in music from the energetic Andrew
Sisters to soothing Pavarotti. She had a zest for life. Music and
dance were part of her joy. Elaine would often Lindy in the
kitchen with Artie, and recently she was known to dance her
way out of the dining room with her walker.

We are all blessed to have had such a wonderful role model in
our lives. We will carry her in our hearts forever. A private
Celebration of Life will be held in Elaine’s honor.
