Edward J. Herman, Sr.


Edward J. Herman, Sr., passed away at the age of 90, on April 20th, 2024, at Mass General Hospital in Salem. He was the beloved husband of the late Jeanne L. (Larcome) Herman. Edward, affectionately known as Ed, was born on January 12th, 1934, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to the late Edward A. and Tillie “Beatrice” Herman.

Ed and Jeanne shared 61 years of marriage until Jeanne’s passing in 2014. Ed attended Boston College High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He proudly served his country during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at the University of Miami. Throughout his life, Ed found success in various business ventures and became well-known for his generosity.

Ed relocated in his later years to Marblehead, which kindly welcomed him as he zoomed around town on his beloved bright red mobility scooter, enjoying the endless scenery and helpful people he met along the way.

As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, church elder, entrepreneur, mentor, and coach, Ed leaves behind a cherished legacy of lives he touched. He lived each day to the fullest and had a remarkable ability to make everyone he encountered feel valued. His charming personality and kindness will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ed and Jeanne were blessed with five children: Barbara Herman of West Hartford, CT; the late Edward Herman, Jr. of Gloucester; Thomas Herman of Portsmouth, NH; Robert Herman and his wife Stacy of Pembroke; and John Herman and his wife Penelope of Marblehead.

Ed had a tremendous love for his 9 grandchildren, whom he adored and cherished dearly. He delighted in spending time with them, sharing stories, and imparting wisdom. Their love and time spent together brought him immense joy, and his affection for them knew no bounds.

Ed remained very active and resilient until his last breath, embracing life with unwavering faith, vigor, and fierce determination.

A private Memorial Service will be held in his honor, commemorating a life lived fully and with enduring love.
