Joan Fitzwilliam Lockwood


Joan Fitzwilliam Lockwood, 88, of Marblehead and Swampscott, died peacefully on December 27, 2017 at The Kaplan House in Danvers, MA after a brief illness.
Joan was born on May 25, 1929, to John Fitzwilliam and Mary Pritchard Fitzwilliam in Brooklyn, NY. Joan graduated from Bishop McDonald High School, where she was voted Swellest Girl We Know, a title she retained throughout her life! She married Francis J. (Frank) Lockwood in 1951 and they raised their three children, Maura Lockwood, Susan Lockwood Schartner (Walter) and Francis J. (Bud) Lockwood (Monica) in Farmingdale, NY. Joan retired in 2004 after 30 years at SUNY Farmingdale and moved to Marblehead, MA. She loved the beach, and was an avid reader and follower of current events, but focused most of her life on her large family and many friendships.
Joan is survived by her three children, grandchildren Kate Schartner Madden (David), Mark Schartner (Lindsay), Angelica Rosa, Nashua Rosa, Jack Lockwood, Eddie Lockwood, Mary Lockwood and Tess Lockwood, five great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her parents and five siblings.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on January 8 at 11:30 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Marblehead. A celebration of her life is planned for the spring on Long Island, NY. Memorials or donations may be made to The Kaplan House in Danvers, MA.
